For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
to associate Tk entry value with spawn

Posted by mairazafar (mairazafar), 7 November 2007
I am trying to make an FTP client application. I want spawn to get value of hostname when user types

proc ftpcon {} {
entry $t.hoste
set name[$t.hoste get]
}
and in other proc i am calling
proc connect_button {} {

spawn ftp

}

Now i want that when i push connect buttonspawn should get the value what user types in Hostname entry.  Can anyone tell me how can i associate these two?

I suggest you use global in a first instance o transfer the data across - I've cut the additions into your code.

proc ftpcon {} {
global name
entry $t.hoste
set name[$t.hoste get]
}
and in other proc i am calling
proc connect_button {} {
global name

spawn ftp  $name

}

You WILL need to add in error checking if you don't already have it - for example to check that your user doesn't attempt to connect when no host has been specified, or if the host specified does not exist or is not running an FTP service.

Its been two days i started learning Expect and i found it useful... Thanks it works
Can i use this global technique for expect and send commands as well?to get username, password and filepath and connect to that FTP. and how to add in error checking?
