Accessing return value from expect in unix shell

Hello Expect Guru's,

I have a very simple query for u people, i.e

If suppose I am returning a value using the  below statement
return {$expect_out(3,string)} from a procedure say abc
[proc abc { }],

then how can I access  the above return value from unix shell script ?,

If it is with in shell , we can use $?, here its not d case right?, please let me know  the solution.
