For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Help for Pocket PC devices

Posted by fredep57 (fredep57), 20 May 2003
Hello,

I am trying to develop for a Pocket PC device.  I have gotten tcl 8.4.2 loaded and tk along with it.

Now I am having some issues because I am trying to develop some of the stuff on the Windows xp platform, but find that some  things are not working on PPC.

1) How do you "exec"ute an application like Word on the PDA?  I can do this with the Console, but need to do this within the tcl script itself.  I keep getting the error "cannot execute file.  file already exists" and am not sure why.

2) How can I put text into another application?  If I can open Word for PocketPC/WindowsCE, I need to insert text, then save the file.  I cannot figure out how to do this.

3) Can I switch between open applications on the PocketPC?  If I have Word and Excel open, can I issue a command that will switch to the other one?

Thanks in advance

Goodness .... I'm feeling a little on "thin ice" with this one ... I'm not at all familiar with the PPC.   You might find someone who's more PPC knowledgeable on other (not Tcl) forums, and it does strike me that questions (2) and (3) at least would apply equally well to programs / systems in other languages.   Even question (1) ... once you know how to exec in any other language, you'll probably get the clue for Tcl.

But of course, I can't resist having a look and making a suggestion.  Pehaps "exec" on the PPC creates a temporary file of the commands to be shelled out ... perhaps such a file exists already from previous experiments and permissions are such that it can't be overwritten?    Pure guess ... hoping at least to give you a line to start thinking down.

Graham
