For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Renaming and Editing Multiple files

Dear editor,
I am a totally newbie to perl. I have a task that will take me 2-3 days and i believe perl script can help me solve within 1 hour
I have a file (a.xls) with the following content:
200 Edwin
201 Susan
202 Winnie
...
500 Tom

I need to create a profile for each of them with a following filenames and content format:
[200] Edwin.txt
Contents: "
Name : Edwin
Seat Number : 200

Mr. Edwin, You are invited to proceed to Seat : 200 "

I know this might sound very simple but i am a totally newbie to programming. Will be grateful for any guidance given. Appreciate a lot for the help.

OK, what have you tried so far? Do you know any perl? Do you know the basic file handling and I/O operations of perl? Do you know basic data munging techniques? Anything?

I suggest you start here:

http://www.perl.org/books/beginning-perl/

When you get some basic code written I will help.
