For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
DBI module missing

Posted by CornishDeity (CornishDeity), 18 June 2006
Hi,

It didn't take long. Having spent most of the day trying to get this sorted I have decided to ask for some advice.

I am trying to connect to a DB from perl, and it would seem that I need DBI to do this. Unfortunately from the box (and DB) that I am workign on this isn't installed. Is it easy to do. I have had a browse on the web and haven't really got anywhere. The database is an oracle 9.2.0.7.0 and the box is HPUX.

I do have access to other boxes with it on, but just copying across DBI.pm doesn't work.

ANy ideas gratefully received.

Briefly, you need to download from the CPAN, unpack and the unpack directory do something like
perl configure.PL
make
make test
make install

You then need to do the same thing for an appropriate DBD module.

There will  be either a README or/and INSTALL file in the directories to help you through the detail and any HPUX specific stuff ... and being Perl there's more than one way of doing it so it will tell you about other ways too

Thanks Graham. I've been cheeky and gone in the back door, via another box with DBI on it. Hopefully I get get it sorted on that box eventually, but in the mean time I have somethign to practise on.

Thanks Graham, a sterling response time
