For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
function to add HTML tags to text

Posted by ontheplains (ontheplains), 7 May 2007
hey guys, so here is what i'm trying to do.  i have 4 fields (noun1, noun2, noun3, verb1) for a person to fill out and what they put into these fields will be printed out at certain points throughout a quotation (basically, it's a madlib with quotes from the simpsons and futurama).  after the four fields, i allow them to select from a drop-down select menu with the options of bold, underlined, italics.  what i need done is that IF they select any of those, i need what is printed out from the fields to be printed out with HTML tag formats (<b><u><i>).

if you need more info, just let me know.  any help would be very appreciated.

You can make the additions to your contribution text area using Javascript - a good way to find an example is to view source from this very page that I'm writing on (and you made the original post on).  Javascript is NOT my strong point, so I'll stop there on that advise and let the page / source talk.

The uploaded text will include BBC markups and NOT HTML tags - that's good because you only want your users to have a restricted set of things they can do - and you'll translate them into tags using preg_replace when you redisplay the text later.

Here is the code we use (on our wiki) to deal with bold and underline.

Code:
$taggled = preg_replace("/\[([bu])\]/",''<\1>'',$taggled);
$taggled = preg_replace("!\[/([bu])\]!",''</\1>'',$taggled);

Hope this gets you started ... let me know if you ned more guidance.

P.S.  Remember to "htmlspecialchars" your user's input to avoid injection attacks on your server / attempts to generate corrupt pages from your site.
