For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Computer/Programming Clubs

Posted by Chris_Isaac (Chris Isaac), 5 September 2006
Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows of any clubs in or around the Newport (Gwent) area?

I'm keen to join to ensure I spend at least a few hours a week programming to help keep my hand in.

If none exist is there anyone who would benefit/would like to see one exist?

Thanks

Chris

Have you looked at places like www.meetup.com, and things like Perl Mongers - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perl_Mongers ?  I'm (personally) noit wildly keen on either and to some extent there lies your potential problem - programmers tend to be solitary rather than social so not anything like so "clubby".   The add the typical British reserve and the fact that Open Source programming ain't as mainstream as excel macros.

If you look around, draw a blank, and are then determined enough to want to set up your own group, let me know; I may be able to email a few folks in your area with your details.

P.S.  It's this programmer's psyche, British reserve and the thin spread geographically of our customers that means that we limit our Geekmas get-together to an annual event rather than running it quarterly. However, we're booking well this year for the FREE event - all the hotel rooms have now been spoken for, but plenty of space for people to join us on 25th and 26th November 2006. See here

Thanks for the response Graham.  My thoughts were more towards people who don't program everyday and who would like to keep their hand in, obvoiusly professional programmers would be welcome as well

Checked out the 2 links, but neither offer any groups in Newport.

Other issue thinking about it would be the diversity of technologies that people may be interested in, personally my interests would be in PHP, mySQL and CSS.

If you know of anyone who may be interested by all means please feel free to pass on my details.

Thanks

Chris
