For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Networking Question

I realize this is more of a programming board, but I'm in a bind and maybe one of you guys can help me out.

I just installed a second NIC in my box. I plan on using it act as a router/domain server. This is the setup:

<cable modem>---------->[my box]---------->[router]-------->[ 2 nodes]

The problem that I am having is that I can't ping the router. I am pretty sure it's picking up the router's IP address because when I set the NIC's IP the same as the router's I get an error message "Error, some other host already uses address 192.168.1.1.". That also tells me that the cable is working properly. I just can't figure out why I can't ping the router.

I think once I can ping the router, I can turn on NAT and get my 2 clients back up, but right now they aren't getting any network connections.

That's likely to be very operating system specific ... and need some configuration / firewalls etc.   Stuff like ipchains ... and not something that I've done as much with as I have with Perl or Python.

These days for around 40 or 50 pounds you can get a router that talks to your network on one side and your cable modem on the other, does all the IP rewrites you'll need and is easy to set up.   We use a DLink DI 614+ but there are other models.  I comment this route as it's much simpler!

I would very much link to use the router option, but I really can't. I have to learn how to configure a linux server (using fedora 4). I'm really just using this as a big learning project. I want to do an e-commerce LAMP project. It's really for my own learning, so I can get a better job than my current data entry position (a lousy $8/hr).

I had to stop home this afternoon and I think part of the problem is the configuration of the router. It was set up for dhcp rather than a static ip. Which would explain why i couldn't ping it from the server.

I should have been able to ping my box from the router though, cause that ip was set up static. I'm going to work on it 2night and hopefully I can figure it out. I know it's probably something stupid on my end. Thanks for writing me back.

Here's an update on a few things that I had to do, it might help someone out:

The no - ping problem was because the cat 5 cable running between the router (linksys wrt54g) and my linux box was in wrong slot, for some reason I couldn't put it in the internet port and had to place it in one of switched ports.

I also had to use a cross-over cable between my PCI NIC and my linux box (no idea why, it must be an old card). I just tried this as a last resort and boom it worked.

To get the rest of my nodes up I had to take the wuss way out and install a gui on my linux box, http://www.fs-security.com/. The gui configured NAT, DHCP, and was really easy to work with. The down side is because it is a gui I really don't know what's going on so I have to read the script it generated to figure out what happened.

I also reset my router to it's default settings. I plan on re-installing the security features when I work on it tonight.
