For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
A scam - www.wwmdirectory.com using Google's name

Posted by admin (Graham Ellis), 9 September 2007
We've recieve a couple of invoices from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, for 79.99 for "Link for www.wwmdirectory.com via Google Adwords direct to client website" ... which is interesting because we have ordered no such service

New scam?  Anyone else seen these?

Here's an interesting follow up ... the invoices appear to come from an estate of self catering holiday bungalows!

Looks a bit unlikely for an outpost of the Google empire to me!

The plot thickens.  I too received the same invoice and upon further investigation uncovered a website linked to ATP claiming that they were the ESIA (European Security Industry Association).  There appears to be no such association and when you view the profile of the Board Members this is a direct rip off from the SIA (Security Industry Authority) website.  I have informed this Government Body who appear to be taking it very seriously!

Furthermore the wwmdirectory.com site shares the same 'contact us' number (07825 393731) as the esiainvestigations.com website that is linked to the ESIA.  I think that this could pan out to be a far greater scam than just unsolicited invoices!

There are a lot of (too many) scams around, but it looks like you and I may be in on the early days of this one, Phil;  my blog and this forum tend to get indexed quite frequently by Google, so I'll put up hot news like this to help give other an early alert / a page where I can add my ha'penneth to the comments and dexperience of others.  Many thanks for contributing and providing more evidence that points towards it being a scam.

One of out team phoned Google about it .... who knew nothing about the inoice and were "going away to investigate" and I'll post any follow ups here.

P.S. I just googled for "wwmdirectory google" and came out top for the blog article - ahead of the wwmdirectory folks.   I expect they'll be really happy about that

Anyone told the Trading Standards on the Isle of Wight, or in their own areas?

Posted by philby (philby), 10 September 2007
Yes - I informed Yorkshire Trading Standards, apparently you contact your area and then they get in touch with the team from where the scam emanated.  It may be worth you ringing Trading Standards local to you Graham as this will put a little extra pressure on the Isle of Wight TS.

Unforunately 5 months on wwwmdirectory is still sending out these invoices as we received one today, no doubt they fall through the net of lots of big companies who dont check and just pay.  Are Google still looking into this ??

I don't know, Christine ... but many thanks for going to the trouble to sign up here and lete everyone who comes to this page know that it's still happening.
