For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Perl Tk

Posted by kenshail (kenshail), 10 June 2005
I am new to this forum and am not clear where to post questions about perl Tk. Should they be in the Perl section or Tcl/Tk section?

Hi,

Good call!

I would think the best place would be the perl forum as perl/tk is biased that way.

Perl/Tk is certainly something of a "minority interest", which is a great shame.  I teach Perl and Tcl courses and our Perl/Tk module is rarely of much relevance ... however the Tk end of Tcl/Tk is in use by a sizeable minority of Tcl users, to the extent that we offer a public course on Tk.    I don't have any stats ... but I would guess that only around 1% of Perl users also use Tk, but that figure rises to around 40% with Tcl.

Why?   Because Tk is commonly distributed with Tcl, and because many people choose Tcl specifically because of the Tk GUI.  With Perl/Tk, you've usually got to go out to the CPAN and add it on.   You could also argue that Perl has a far wider usage than Tcl in applications that inherently can't make use of Tk, such as cgi scripts ... so you see a lot more Perl users for whom it's just not relevant.

I admit to haviing zero knowledge of Tcl.
I started with Activestate Perl 5.6 which came with a useable collection of Tk modules.
Mandrake 9.1 onwards also runs Tk, once selected from the installation CD but RedHat 9 doesn't.  (In fact it seems to have a problem in installation from the tarball which I would like to post elsewhere if possible.)
For me the Perl -> Perl Tk route has, I believe avoided the VB route and, I hope is just as powerful and more platform independant.
I would be interested to hear an informed comparison of Perl+Tk with VB, having never used it myself and  often wonder if I made the right descision. (Apart from being Linux biased).

Ken, I'm not a VB expert, so I can't give you an authoritative comparison.  What I *can* tell you is that I only provide training / support / consultancy on technologies that I believe to be excellent ... and, yes, that includes Tk (and Tk under Perl).

Right decision for you?  Probably, since you've clearly given it some thought.  Each GUI system has its strengths and weaknesses, which need to be weighted up against the "metrics" of the application ... what it needs to do, whether it needs to be accessible via a browser, whether it needs to be operating system independent, whether it needs to be distributable as a standalone download, etc. .... as well as the coding issues of "how easy is it to do x" and "can I easliy alter my code to do y too if even I need?"
