For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Great ISP

Don't we always grumble at bad service ... well just occasionally I'm suprised by service that's excellent and beyond what I expect and it happened today ... so thought I would give our web space provider a positive plug.

This site is hosted by Hurricane Electric at http://www.he.net.   I'm well impressed by their web space products ... and today (rare occasion) I had to call on their technical support.  A real b****rd of a question but hear this -
phone picked up directly by technical support after only 3 rings.  A guy who really knew his stuff, sorted out the problem with me.  No going on hold, no "call back" ...

Thank you, Hurricane - I would recommend you to anyone with reasonable technical knowledge who's looking for a good hosting service (and for the cynics, I don't get anything back for this plug!)

well while were on the subject of good hosts.

Try www.dsvr.co.uk
I have my own apache & mysql, I can configure/break my httpd.conf and my php.ini to my hearts content.
They don't offer a great deal of space (300Mb for £300pa) and the bandwidth can be tight, but wow...full access and host as many domains as you wish.
The support is also very knowledgable (but not 24/7) by phone or email.

I've very happy with my account with them, mind you I've not cancelled my he.net account either, but I'm thinking about it.

Good to see you back, jfp ... that does look to be a good package; if I get nervous and want to move some of my eggs out of the one basket they seem to have migrated into at the moment, I'll certainly have a look at DSVR

Have to stick my oar in.

I think dedicated-servers.co.uk rawks, and I don't mind who knows it. (more details here). This incident led me to contact the MD of the company to send a 'raving fan' message.

It's very important that good customer service is acknowledged and pushed. I provide tech support for our front desk software package, and I am of the "fanatical support" bent. Nothing matters more than giving ridiculous amounts of support, especially when it results (and it has!) in many referrals and new business.

I don't understand how many companies don't get this. They spend large amounts of money creating incentives for their sales force to get new sales. They look at their support staff merely as a drain on resources, or as if they contribute nothing to the business. How wrong can you be? You may have only one or two contacts with a sales person, but, if the doodad you buy goes crump, you're going to spend a lot of time talking to a support person. The better trained / motivated / remunerated that person is, the better off your company is. Period!

Anyway, nuff ranting. Check out dedicated-servers.co.uk, they're good, and the service rocks.

Welcome, Alan!

That's another one to try out, then ... there's a good sprinkling of excellent space providers out there in amongst a great sea of poor-to-mediocre ones.

Personally, I always enjoy learning / trying things out - a new restaurant opens in town and we'll give it an early try, a new book comes out and we'll get a copy; we had broadband before the provider would admit that it could run more than one Windows PC, etc... and yet .... with ISPs and Indian Restaurants we're so happy with the service.   Guess that's good news for Hurricane and the Refa!

Any good Indian food shops around Melksham?

It's been, oh, 20 years since I had a good barfi...

Restaurants - one EXCELLENT  (they do a good Kulfi) and two or three others untried but getting good reviews  from friends.  I can't eat chocolate, which rather rules out certain other desserts. I rather suspect that if they were asked on Tuesday night, they might prepare something special by Friday even if it's not on the menu

Can't eat chocolate? Oh, the humanity!

Looking forward to trying those restaurants..

oops, boss walks in

s/trying those restaurants/studiously and soberly attending the course.
