For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Advise on viruses

Posted by Chris_Isaac (Chris Isaac), 1 August 2003
Hi

Was hoping you I could pick your brains.  1 of our computers has become infected with a virus.  It was sent by email, we didn't have to open it, just selected it and it triggered the virus.

Is there anyway of stopping this happening?

Incidently, I have received 2 emails, suposingly from you, they had attachements so I deleted them, please let me know if you sent them intentionally.

Thanks

Chris

Chris, I received an email with no text - just an enclosure, saying that it was from me and to me, but quoting your domain name deep in the headers that suggested to me that it was from you and perhaps the result of a virus infection.   I wrote you one email this morning, expressing that concern and copying the email I had received back to you, including the enclosure, to let you know that you might have a problem.  Guess you've found out  anyway

yes.....

also had a phone call from the IT dept of the RAC  saying we had a virus, oops....

getting it sorted as we speak.

If I blocked any message with attachments would this stop the problem of receiving the viruses?

Thanks

Chris

Receiving plain text messages only would be a good approach - except that some folks insist on sending their messages in HTML ...

As we don't use a Windows operating system on the machines on which we read our mail, I'm not the best person to advise you in detail.  If you can get / use a mail client which displays plain text ONLY even if it accepts other formats, that would be good.  If you can run an incoming virus filter and keep it up to date, that would help too
