For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
A new toy

Posted by John_Moylan (jfp), 8 January 2004
Hello all.

may I be so bold as to share with you my latest toy, its the best thing I've bought in ages.

Its called a squeezebox and is a wireless mp3 player, you may have heard of its predecessor called slimp3.

To give you a bigger picture of what it does.....
I'm currently ripping all my CD's to MP3 using the open source "lame" as the mp3 encoder, its far better than iTunes MP3 or AAC ripping.

I then store all my music files on my Linux server and the squeezebox connects to my HiFi amplifier and I then have access to my entire music collection via the squeezebox remote control without ever having to change a CD again, all  through my wireless home network.

Now heres the killer bit for me, all the software for the player is written in Perl and is OpenSource, hack and add to your little hearts content. Theres a whole community adding plugins to this device (theres a nice one that streams the BBC news ticker info to it)

have a look for yourselves, its great.

Look at the remote streaming bit, I can listen to my entire music collection at work now.

Oh, happy new year everybody.

Happy New Year to you too (it sounds like it's a fun new year for you!).  I've just got back after a l-o-n-g flight from LA; brain not yet engaged enough to go through technical specs and questions, but your squeezbox is a page I will probably browse as I get into gear again!

Hmm ... such statuses are for the stars; we seem to have a situation at the moment where both the UK and the US authorities both feel they have a right to a healthy chunk of our income
