For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Import Data from MS Access

Posted by shajan (shajan), 24 September 2002
Hi
I am allready having an MS access database. how to convert that data into MySQL?

Access is in Windows NT and MySQL is in Redhat Linux.

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm .... I'm a lot weaker on Access than are others who are around here so will some of you who I know lurk please follow up on my answer. Thanks!

As I understand it, Access is different to other databases in that it's a file format that's used directly by applications or .dlls within applications, rather than by a daemon.  It would probably be unkind to call it "a toy", but I imagine that your reason for moving is because you're running out of steam?

There are probably a number of routes you could take;  I've done a search and come up with myODBC as one possibility ...

You need MyODBC which you can download from http://www.mysql.com.

There are certainly more knowledgable people here who can explain it better, but when I was trying to figure this out last week I found that the documentation for MyODBC was not great, so here's how I did it, hopefully it will work for you. Unfortunately  you need to do some configuring first, but once it is done it seems to run fine.

snip - 10 configuration steps ...

Thats it, you are ready to roll. Goto to MS Access and select export. From the dialog of database types select ODBC (usually at the bottom). You will then need to select the DSN you have set up, ie MySQL Database and you are away, it should tranfer all of the data. You can also do the same in reverse to import data from MySQL to Access.

The full text (including the 10 steps to follow) is at:
