resetting root account

Posted by Chris_Isaac (Chris Isaac), 26 February 2009
Um.. made a bit of a boo boo earlier, managed to delete the root account, which was unfortunately the only account I had.

Is there a way of resetting it, or do I have to reinstall mysql completely?

I've got around it by reinstalling, but out of curiosity can it be done any other way?

It's pretty dire if you've got rid of the only / all the accounts from which you manage MySQL.  However, if you need to recover your data / other information, you can do a fresh install using another data directory / on another machine, set the accounts up on that, and transfer the vital tables as files.  Making sure that you have shut down MySQL before you transfer those files - user.frm user.MYI and user.MYD are the critical ones.

And please - backup the data area as is before you make any changes so you can get back if it fails!
