For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Error 1148

Posted by Eggie44 (Eggie44), 11 January 2004
Hi all,

I'm a newbie with MySQL and my first attempt to follow the tutorial steps leads me to
mysql>LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE "pet.txt" INTO TABLE pet;
ERROR 1148: The used command is not allowed with this MySQL version
so I check my version, which happens to be 4.0.12...
Any clue or did I miss a line in the manual??

Thx

Two thoughts:

a) Is your (4.0.12) MySQL daemon a pre-compiled binary that you downloaded yourself from the MySQL web site, or a version you compiled yourself, or a version that was compiled by a third party? When compiling MySQL, there are a number of switches available to allow you to provide / not provide certain facilities, and I am wondering if you have a trimmed-down version running; these days, I personally use the "max" binary download version which includes everything.

b) What version of the MySQL client are you running on your loacl machine?   Is it also 4.0.12, or is there a chance that you have a much older version?   The "local" infile load is a bit different to most MySQL commands in that it requires interaction within the command between the client and the server, and you may get unexpected results such as you report if the client is way out of date

Well Graham,

the complete answer to the select version(); query is 4.0.12-max-debug. I simply got the currently most stable version available on the MySQL download page, and as a beginner I didn't seek trouble taking anything else than the precompiled one, i.e. my client and server are the same generation.
Besides I checked the value of the local_infile global variable and it is ON.
