For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
2003 Error cannot connect to MySQL on Win XP Home

Posted by Chris_Isaac (Chris Isaac), 15 January 2006
Hi

I've installed MySQL in my Win XP Home ed machine, If I use the MySQL Command line client I can access Mysql ok, but I keep getting the above error if I try to connect from the command line window that I've opened.  Have tried altering my security setting but no joy.

This is the command I've tried:

Code:
mysql -h localhost -u root -p

It then asks me for a password, then comes up with the error.

Myqsl is refinately running, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Is there a second line to the error message - "wrong authentication protocol" or something like that?

Ok... Don't you just hate it when you ask a question, then have a brain wave.....

I've cured the problem.... My fault, when I originally run the MySQL Server Config Wizard I had not selected the Include Bin directory option.

Now working.

Sorry Graham, you're too fast at responding   was just replying when you answered.

Thanks anyway.

Hey, Chris ... glad it's sorted and I expect people to carry on "worrying" the problem what they've posted it.

What has got me really p***ed off in the past is when someone (NOT you) has posted a problem, then fixed it within a few minutes but left the question hanging around for several days and reacts with surprise when someone answers
