Nestling in a bend of the river Severn is the old market town of Shrewsbury. The river is naviagable for only a short stretch here now, but it used to be navigable from the mouth near the modern Severncrossings through Gloucester and Worcester past Stourport (current head of navigation) to Ironbridge (now a part of Telford), Shrewsbury and across the border to Welshpool
