For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
How do you test/debug PHP/Apache installation

Posted by Chris_Isaac (Chris Isaac), 17 January 2004
Hi

I've installed apache and php on my local machine (Win XP).  I followed the installation instructions as per your php notes but its not working, ie, if I try to view the test page, <?php phpinfp(); ?> it just prints out the line as plain text.

Any ideas on how to see which part isn't working?

Thanks

Sorry, just a thought, in the manual when it says to put the test page in the htdocs directory, it does mean the following I assume:

c:/program files/apache group/apache/htdocs

or can I put files anywhere?

The most common thing that shows up this error is for you to be using a file:// URL to access the file on your local machine;  if you're doing that, then your browser is reading the php file direct from the disc rather than through your Apache / PHP service, so the PHP won't be interpretted.   You need to use an http:// type URL ...

Sorry if this seems a daft question, but I haven't worked locally before, should the full path be like this:

Quote:
http://c:/program%20files/Apache%20Group/Apache/htdocs/test.php4

I tried the above and it came up with could not find server
