For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Next Course for me

Hi there Graham.

Just posted and it dissappeared into cyber space, so will post something shorter this time!

I'm hoping to come down for another course, after doing the PERL training with you previously.  I'd like to do something that combines the PERL I have done with creating some sexy webpages. Used for some of our monitoring and applications at work, but also for some personal reasons. I'm not sure what you'd recommend?

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

Ollie, I'm torn.  A part of me say "you know Perl - stick with that and use it on the web", but the other part of me says "have a look at PHP too".   Perl is great for many purposes, and PHP is much more web specific.  Which means that PHP can be used VERY quickly, cleanly, easily for many web apps but they're a little more longwinded in Perl .... where, however, the code yo ugenerate can be more easily used offline too.    I think I'm coming down on the "stick with Perl" answer, even though there's less training in that for me

Have a look at Using Perl on the Web - next runs in January - which takes your existing Perl skills, helps you brush up on them in a short revision session, then adds web applications to those skills.   It's never a very busy course so there's plenty of personal attention given - a great fun couple of days.

Great thanks Graham! I've just put in an application to do the two day PERL and 4 day PHP course in January. I think Stephen and Paul would both also like to attend these, but lets see what our L&D say first.

Do you think we need to attend the one day PHP course first? I jsut a little worried that this might eb the straw that broke the camels back. Or do you do a five day PHP course that incorporates both?

Anyway, thanks again

No, I don't think you need the lead in day.   You've got enough prior experience; that extra initial day is for delegates who are told "you've done a great graphic arts job with our letterhead and logo, now loearn about the web and write us an online ordering system".
