For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
language for simple apps?

Posted by screwyluie (screwyluie), 8 August 2003
I learned Tcl/Tk once a long time ago, but I've since forgotten it, and I want to get back into programming for basic programs in windows mainly, and I'm wondering what would be the best, easiest, etc language to learn on.

I don't really care for c++, VB, etc, they're big and complicated and more vast then I need. simple improv language like tcl/tk would be best for me since my apps are basic, but I was wondering if I had any other choices besides tcl/tk, just getting a feel for the playing field.

If you've learnt Tcl/TK in the past this would seem the best route back. IMHO

I'm sure that once you get back into it the synapses will kick in and it will all come back to you.

Alternatives:

Well, seeing as VB is out of the frame (I don't like it either) you could use Perl/TK. Like Tcl this is cross platform and its a great language to use.

There is a GTK extension to PHP (an easy to learn language) but I'm not sure if this GUI extension will cross to Windows. (Then again build your GUI in HTML)

Have a look at http://www.activestate.com/
This is a good starting point for Open Source development on Windows.

I agree with jfp ... if you 've done some Tcl/Tk, that's an excellent place to re-start.  It'a a very different language to most of the others, and if you're writing code for others to run on their computers they will need to laod Tcl/Tk, but - restart with Tcl/Tk - get you hand in again!

tcl compiles into binaries... and can also be packaged with the wish client, then setup the link to run the program with the wish client... so all is well and good in that area

I was just wondering if there are other languages out there, small and easy to learn like tcl/tk that's all

ok where's a good interactive tcl/tk site? like a developer's community, BBS, etc...

I'm going to need some code snippits and some help with my project... I'm simply not finding the documentation that I need.

thanx

Have a look at http://www.tcl.tk for starters. The Tcl/Tk community is thinly spread - you won't find a lot of very active communities.   There *are* a number of good books, although you'll probably have to get them from Amazon rather than from your local bookstore. Start at http://www.wellho.net/resources/tclbooks.html
