Which software configuration? Posted by Lorenzo_G (Lorenzo_G), 16 October 2003 Hi all, i'm new to this forum and i just wanted to get some help if at all possible. I'm a final year BSc Computer Science student and I'm about to start my final project. I have to create an online auctions database, (like ebay), firstly using access and asp. I then need to research another software configuration of DBMS and scripting language to see which one would be more suitable for my choice of project. I have looked into using MySql with PHP as there are a few books around on this subject, but I'm also seeing that Perl has been mentioned a lot on this site. Bearing in mind the fact that I dont have a lot of time to learn a new language, and also that im not the worlds strongest programmer, could anyone please give me a hand in choosing a suitable configuration. Many thanks. Lorenzo_G. Posted by John_Moylan (jfp), 16 October 2003 personally, and its only an opinion...I'd go down the PHP route.Perls a great language, I prefer it to PHP...but "horses for courses" I'll admit that PHP will be more suited. (I think its easier to learn than Perl too) If your going down the PHP route with MySQL look at "pear.php.net" and grep for the pear db module. makes life a bit easier in the long run Posted by admin (Graham Ellis), 16 October 2003 I would agree with jfp .... if you're writing something that is web pages with embedded content, then PHP is a language designed for the purpose. Perl is much more wide ranging in what it can do, so if you consider your project to be a major application that also involves a lot of admin scripts, etc, that run separate from a web interface and want to use some of the same code, the Perl might be a better bet.BUT .... hey - they're both EXCELLENT languages to choose ![]() Posted by John_Moylan (jfp), 17 October 2003 funny that you mention the use of admin scripts, I do nearly all my web stuff in PHP, but still use Perl for all admin scripts.Point being, its never one or the other. jfp This page is a thread posted to the opentalk forum
