For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Directions on best language to use....

I would like to query a folder on my server and generate an xml doc with a list of the filenames in the folder. I'm not sure what language would be best...php? java? I can figure it out I just need some suggestions on where to begin.

Hi

PHP is more than capable of doing this, obviously Java, perl could do it as well.

If you are looking are looking to work on larger projects with other people Java is probably the best option but for smaller type scripts, PHP is cool.

Graham can give a better idea of the other benifits of the languages, but I hope this helps.

Incidently, I don't know what learning methods you were going to use, but if you're looking for a great PHP course I can highly recommend the http://www.wellho.net/course/phfull.html I did the course 1 few years ago, brilliant.

Well .... I've spotted that your previous posts here are all PHP rather than  Java so I suspect that you're a bit further forward in PHP; I would stick with it rather than learing two languages at once.   And it sounds like it's quite a small piece of code so again PHP is the more logical choices, as Chris outlines.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of local skills available to you in Java to help you, but would be on your own in PHP, you might do better to go where you have that help at hand.
