Inverness is the capital of the Highlands which stretch right across from Aberdeenshire to places such as
Ullapool and the
Isleofskye ... and it's now been promoted, officially, into a city - perhaps one of my favourite cities in the British Isles.
Map locator - Inverness
The river Ness flows through Inverness, wide but shallow and spanned by characteristic suspension footbridges (photo, anyone?) as it flows down from nearby Loch Ness - a long, thin, dark and deep lake (but don't dare call it a lake!) that's said to be the home of Nessie, the monster.

Urquhart Castle on Lock Ness
Urquhart Castle stands on a promontory overlooking Lock Ness and guarding Urquhart bay - the weather looks dull and overcast adding to the atmosphere.
On Culloden Moor, to the East of Inverness, the rebellion of (17)45 by Charles, the young pretender to the crown, was brought to a bloody halt.

Culloden
You can walk over Culloden Moor and get the feel of the place, and visit the interpretation centre there too.
