If you want a scenic drive as you travel from England to Scotland, turn off the M6 after Lancaster (though you'll miss the excellent Tebay services) and travel through the lake district over the Kirkstone Pass and beside Ullswater before rejoining the motorway at Penrith and carrying on past Carlisle.
