For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

3269Files or Databases? MySQL, SQLite, or Oracle?
Are plain files a bad idea? Should you use a database instead? Plain text files are a great way of saving data in some circumstances ... but in other circumstances they have "issues": 1. If you're saving columns of data in a plain text file, you need to have some sort of separator between the columns, ...

2786Factory methods and SqLite in use in a Python teaching example
I've just uploaded a neat little example - [here] from last week's Python course - it's amazing what you can do in a very few lines of code. The application scenario is that we have a database of customers - some are residents at our hotel and others are delegates on our courses. Being mercenary folks, ...

2561The future of MySQL
MySQL has grown from a very neat little open source database 10 years ago into a very powerful and widespread database that's not always fully open source any longer today. The MySQL company was bought out by Sun a couple of years back (January 2008), and in turn Oracle are now buying Sun. This deal ...

2134Oracle take over Sun who had taken over MySQL
The newspaper tells me that Oracle is buying Sun Microsystems. Since Sun Microsystems bought MySQL about a year ago, this means that Oracle now owns MySQL. I wonder what they will do with it. I am reminded of FrameMaker being taken over by Adobe, and attempts to move the customer base to PageMaker ...

924The LAMP Cookbook - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl
It all started on Friday as we came back from the pub. I was describing how we've been, twice, on Neil Bauman's Geek Cruises but never been asked to talk or lecture, even in a "lightning session" on them. A little wistfully, maybe, as I'm a "wannabe" - I would love to get up and deliver a talk just ...

84MySQL - nuggets
I had great pleasure in listening to David Axmark and Monty Widenius talking about MySQL this morning. Great news - Monty and David ...

Have you written a web site using plain old HTML (perhaps with style sheets and images) and then extended it to more interactive content using a little PHP, JSP, Perl, cgi or similar? An almost too-crowded schedule. Yesterday morning, the founders of MySQL, and I have posted more fully about their talks elsewhere on the site - here and here.
