MySQL is a great database to use in a wide variety of applications. It runs fast, and it's relatively simple to configure and administer. It's also easily shared between different appliactions in the same server. These are amongst the reasons that MySQL has grown in its use so much in the last couple of years. At Well House Consultants, we use MySQL as an integral part of several applications on our website, and we run a two day training course that covers SQL in general, and MySQL in particular, up to a level that's more than sufficient for the majority of new users.
