For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

Talks and lectures
Resources from the web site of Well House Consultants on the subject of Talks and lectures. We provide open source training course and business hotel accommodation in Melksham, Wiltshire, England

Background
From time to time, I'm asked to talk to larger groups. Where that's an evening event close to our base that doesn't mean I have to take a day off training I'm usually happy to oblige. Longer distances, and weekday / daytime events also catered for, but on a commercial footing.

3834Geekmas 2012 - celebrating open source languages such as Perl, PHP and Python
STOP PRESS / 29th October Sadly, this weekend has turned out to have been a poor choice for many of our friends, and we've decided not to have a specific Geekmas weekend this year. Past delegates are always welcome - VERY welcome to come and stay with us at Well House Manor - any weekend (but do check ...

3351Research and development with the help of your tutor or guide
"If it's Friday, it must be Italy". We're in the middle of four days of seeing four different new places; call it "broadening the experience" if you like. Broadening the experience is like research - you don't know what you're going to learn until you learn it, and you don't know what use (or unuse) ...

3221How long is a speech?
I regularly take part in "Just a minute" at TravelWatch SouthWest, where delegates who wish to raise an issue of give a quick update are allowed to speak for up to 60 seconds ... at which point a timer rings, and they have to stop. Such talks, to an audience of receptive friends and contacts, are usually ...

924The LAMP Cookbook - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl
It all started on Friday as we came back from the pub. I was describing how we've been, twice, on Neil Bauman's Geek Cruises but never been asked to talk or lecture, even in a "lightning session" on them. A little wistfully, maybe, as I'm a "wannabe" - I would love to get up and deliver a talk just ...

1101Mushroom Curry and Perl Courses
When I first ate a chicken chop suey, in my childhood, the dish was described and explained to me to help me decide whether or not I wanted to try it. But once I have tried and decided about chicken chop suey, I could make an educated guess what beef chop suey and vegetable chop suey would be (as I ...

1459Interactive training, and advancing techniques further
One of the unusual things about the way that I train is that I write examples in front of my classes - I don't just go through cases that have been prepared ahead of time. Not only does that mean that I can show people what they want to see rather that what I have guessed they want to see, but it also ...

1242Speaking at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University

There are hundreds of IT staff at the University, ...

99Should we call it 'Geekmas'?
There's a long gap in the UK between the August Bank Holiday in the late summer and Christmas day, the next public holiday .... yet there are then 7 public holidays in 5 months (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May day and Spring Bank Holiday). So, a couple of years ...
