For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

332Looking up IP addresses
Browsers, mail clients, ftp and ssh and telnet clients and the rest are for ever converting fully qualified names such as www.sheepbingo.co.uk into IP addresses such as 212.227.118.78. How can you do such a lookup manually? Firstly, there are numerous web sites out there that will help you - I'm not ...

2552Web site traffic - real users, or just noise?
It's been said that on some web sites these days, the majority of traffic isn't users at a regular browser at all; instead, it's robots that are indexing the page (such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Yandex and others), and malware that's looking for holes through which to inject content on to other people's ...

2282Checking robots.txt from Python
The robots.txt file - which well behaved automata check to see whether they are welcome on a web site - has two directives in its base specification ' User-Agent and DisAllow. You will find some other directives used, and you will find some sites who have a robots.txt file that has blank lines after ...

2214Global Index to help you find resources
How can you find all blog articles on Ruby? How about everything that I've written about looking after forums, and with all the information about spammers close to it? With 15,000 URLs on the site, these apparently easy questions aren't so easy any more. However - In an attempt to help (largely ...

2094If you have a spelling mistake in your URL / page name
What do I do if someone reports a spelling mistake on one of our pages? I check that they're right (OK - I usually know straight away that they ARE as I'm one of the world's worst spellers and often distort one word into another valid word), and fix the page. And drop them a brief "thank you" of course. ...

1024Web site - a refresh to improve navigation
With over 8000 pages on the web site, we're not short of visitors kindly sent by Google, Yahoo, MSN and friends ... but once they arrive at a potentially interesting article, they're all too often leaving again before exploring related material that could be of use to them. The web site has grown over ...

1969Search Engines. Getting the right pages seen.
"I've been visited by a robot - what do I do about it?" I chuckled at the question when I came across it yesterday when looking up the Robots Exclusion Standard ("also known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol"). The answer given was "do nothing" and I would agree - almost. Or I might suggest "Celebrate". Why ...

1198From Web to Web 2
"How do these technologies relate to Web 2?" asked one of my customers last week as we studied Apache httpd and Apache Tomcat. And of course that's followed up by the need to answer the question "What is Web 2". Initial web sites - "Web 1" if you like - were discreet information sources provided by ...

1686FTP - how not to corrupt data (binary v ascii)
Greetings from Aylesbury ... where I am spending much of this week during the day giving a Linux (LAMP) course, and much of the evening catching up on work. So just a brief tip today .. 1636What to do if the Home Page is missing
The Web Server Administrator has two choices as to what he / she should do when a content provider doesn't supply a home page (index.html or similar) in a directory - either he can generate an error such as a 403 ("Forbidden") or 404 ("Not found"), or he can generate a directory listing, so that the ...

1431Getting the community on line - some basics
We're very much involved at the high-tech end of internet programming and web site development and training. But it's really good for me good to see the other end of the spectrum, from time to time, and an hour's seminar at Chippenham Library last night, run by the local community web team, was an ideal ...

1176A pu that got me into trouble
If you're a regular visitor to the Well House Consultants web site, you may have noticed subtle changes over the last couple of days; the "Version 7" web site that we introduced at the new year wasn't up to the standard we had hoped and rather than making incremental changes, I've swept new profiles ...

1168Moving out some of the web site bloat
A late-night post ... the weekend has slipped away from us with a huge variety of things to catch up on, and a major new project on our web site. The update that we brought in over the new year has been working reasonably, but has been showing signs of "bloat" - too much, too complex to the detriment ...

1031robots.txt - a clue to hidden pages?
The robots.txt file is designed to provide spiders and crawlers with a list of places they should NOT go - it's described as the "robot exclusion standard" file and its intent is to allow the webmaster to segregate his site into indexable and non-indexable. But because it lists directorys to be excluded, ...

528Getting favicon to work - avoiding common pitfalls
Ever wondered how to set up a "favicon" - one of those tiny logos that appear in your "location" line of your visitor's browsers? Ever tried to do it and found that - in spite of following all the instructions - it hasn't worked. Yes, I've been there too - but you'll notice that "favicon"s are now ...
