For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

Staff
Resources from the web site of Well House Consultants on the subject of Staff. We provide open source training course and business hotel accommodation in Melksham, Wiltshire, England

Background
Our staff have many years of experience. Between the 3 of us on the technical team, that works out around a total of 80 man-years. Your course will be taught by a professional who's a real enthusiast for the subject he's teaching; he'll be teaching using his own training notes, developed with his experience on the subject in question. The support staff know their onions too ... phone or email at any time, and you'll be answered by someone who'll ask about what your training needs are and will suggest the right course for you.

4189Who are we - Lisa, Graham, Gypsy and Billy
Lisa and Graham [Ellis], Gypsy and Billy. Gypsy is a lurcher - a Staffie / Greyhound crossbreed (we think) and Billy is a Greyhound - don't know if he's totally purebred. Both came to us as "rescue"s - Gypsy about 4 years ago from the Dog's Trust in Newbury, and Billy from Bristol DAWG (Dog Action Welfare ...

3961Well House Staff Party
A great time had by all at the Lamb at Strand last night - it was a chance for me to say "thank you" to the best team that I've ever worked with. And I'm proud to say it here, in public, too. We're all looking forward to seeing you in 2013. Whether you're attending one of our IT courses or simply staying ...

185Who am I?
Do you know who I am? I'm Graham Ellis, author, and trainer on the Perl, PHP, Python (and other) courses run by Well House consultants. If you were reading "The Horse's Mouth" from day 1, last August, you'll now this. If you're a customer you'll know it too. But we've been growing; these daily jottings ...

3490How not to call when job seeking ...
How to lose any chance you may have when calling to ask about a job: * Call with the family in the room making plenty of noise. * Sound desparate - ask for "anything". * Don't give your name or introduce yourself. * Make it obvious you haven't researched the company you're calling. * Blurt out your request ...

3586Emergency First Aid Provision at Well House Manor - part of the service
We were on the "other end" of training today - receiving a course rather than giving one. And we've now got four members of staff - that's every weekday shift covered - with someone who's taken the Emergency first aid at work course - and passed with flying colours. We hope that we never have to ...

10What do you look for in your IT trainer?
Who should you learn from? Should you learn from the most knowledgeable person that you can find on the subject you want to learn? Not necessarily. The geek that you find may not be a skilled tutor, may not have training material, may assume too much prior knowledge and, importantly, may not know ...

2775Declarations of interest - knowing where you stand with people
"I wonder what HIS agenda is ..." - a question asked at the Steering Group meeting for the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership, when we met earlier today. And the question - about someone else who's a good ear-bender in the railway campaigning arena - is a good one. If someone's on the payroll of ...

3460Flying Colours!
Congratulations to Rachel, who completed her final exam of her apprenticeship at the tail end of last week. She's passed the course with flying colours and, I understand, in something of a record time. A year ago, I wouldn't have considered that we're big enough to employ apprentices, nor that we ...

Congratulation to Sarah, one of our key team members, in regaining the National Autograss Racing Championship (for class 2 vehicles) at Hereford last weekend. We've got a great team at Well House Manor. 3212Well House Manor - a home from home for the business and leisure guest in Melksham
I'm very proud of our team at Well House Manor, and probably don't say "Thank You" enough too them - nor let them know often enough that I notice that the little yet some important jobs that are slightly off the routine get done. So why am I writing about staff, and showing you pictures of ...

3201A change to the Well House team - thank you and good luck, Chris
Family, friends and regular customers may know that Chris, who's worked for us for a number of years at Well House Manor, was away for a considerable period at the end of last year. Chris was admitted to hospital in August - paraphrasing Monopoly "Go directly to Hospital. Do not complete your shift. ...

A personal, big, THANK YOU to all of our customers, and all our staff, for everything they've done for Well House this year, and a very happy Christmas to one and all. 3051Positively reforming the system - could it be done?
One of the frustrating things to us, as employers, is the "benefit / poverty trap". That's where someone who's currently supported by the state wishes to work, but is prevented from doing so "because it will cost me - I will loose more in benefit than I gain in salary". And that has been said - on ...

I'm not sure if "why do you have a ponytail" is a question about a course or about a subject we teach ... actually it's rather personal... but it's a good question and I have chosen to answer in this case. Here are three possible answers for the beard - and - ponytail question. Which do you think it ...

2960The Well House team - September 2010
If you're a regular reader, you'll have seen me advertising an opportunity to join our team [here], and we also put the word around in more conventional ways such as a line in the local newspaper. 2934Not so much software training - more hotel keeping!
These last few days, I've changed from being a software trainer to being a hotel keeper, a conference co-ordinator, a breakfast chef, a staffing organiser, and a sales and marketing person for hotel rooms and for training courses. So there's no Perl or wisdom, no Ruby gem for me to blog about. There's ...

2772Graham Ellis - Summary of Training Record
It's surprisingly rare that I'm asked for my own training record ... and that's probably no bad thing, as it's only a part of what I have learned over the years. Sharing an introduction I made elsewhere - I'm not just an IT trainer - I do have other interests! Hi, I'm Graham Ellis. 2164Updating my public profile - Graham Ellis
It's when delegates start asking me how old the picture of me in the back of the training notes is that I realise I should update my picture from time to time - not that people choose the person to teach their PHP course based on a photo of the tutor. The picture on the right is me, taken on 27th April ...

2044Please Trouble me
"I don't like to trouble you" ... so say the British, and the British delegates who come on our courses. At the very tail end of last month, we ran a MySQL course back in the old training centre rather that at Well House Manor - quite simply, we're getting busier with external bookings as well as our own courses, and now that we have three conference rooms we can mix and match as appropriate.
