For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

3489Python courses and Private courses - gently updating our product to keep it ahead of the game
It's remarkable how stable our courses and training have been over the years. After all, you don't want to learn to program in a language, and then invest significant resources in design and coding, if you're going to have to start again in a year or two! However, technologies do move on and languages ...

3310How fast is your Internet access? Do you need something faster for your business or home?
Wiltshire Council is supporting the rollout of "Superfast Broadband" across Wiltshire for both residents and businesses, and is currently running a survey on their web site - at [here]. 3196No news is good news.
In February 2009, petrol was £0.90 per litre, in February 2010 it was £1.12 and by February 2011 it was £1.28. In February 2009, a 2 day public course at Well House Consultants would have cost you £600.00 + VAT. In February 2010 it would still have been £600.00 + VAT, ...

3174Sharing a single hotel internet connection without carrying extra hardware
We have a wired internet connection here in our hotel in Frankfurt, and we're paying X Euros per day for the use of it. The publicity says "up to 2 Mac addresses", but the practice is that it's working with a single Mac address, and it takes a lot of hassle with reception and the suppliers of the connection ...

3137Training Classes - should the training company provide a system for each delegate to use?
Background. We provide training courses in IT subjects - we specialize in "Open Source" programming languages such as Python, Lua, Perl and PHP, but also offer some associated topics such as SQL, and some Linux including administration training for server configuration and deployment. 3130New Computers for delegates to use
Time flies! It doesn't feel like it - but it's been three years since we replaced our fleet of delegate computers (see [here]). The Compaq machines have really done very well, but they're beginning to look a little long in the tooth. Those that are still running Windows have been running Vista, and ...

3109A weighty decision
We like to keep the computers that we use for training - both the machines that we use for presenting courses, and the machines that our delegates use during courses - up to date. And that means that every couple of years we renew our fleet - pensioning off machines which in truth probably still have ...

2850Fresh Paint for course presentation - including C++
During courses, I project from (and sit at) an Apple Mac laptop - I have done for a number of years. But then I'll access / use other machines from the Mac laptop. That allows me to have the graphic power and strengths of the Mac, the Unix operating system and it's environment, and access to Linux ...

2810A course review - for the tutor to complete
A Course is for the delegates .... but it's really nice if the tutor gets a little out of it too. And usually I do! I run private courses at Company's offices on a regular basis - about 30% of my teaching time is on the road. I always ask my delegates to complete course evaluation forms as they provide ...

2795Simon says
I hope I'm never tempted to sell you a five day course when three days will be plenty; that's not just looking for the moral high ground ... it's the practicality of keeping a couple of other days open for other things, and the knowledge that if you get a well timed rather than an elongated course, you'll ...

2370C++, Python, and other training - do we use an IDE
A question from my inbox ... "Do you use Visual Studio, or a similar IDE". And worth a full answer, and one to be shared. 2222A (biased?) comparison of PHP courses in the UK
In answer to an email asking about alternative PHP courses ... I'm the tutor of our PHP courses, and I also keep a keen eye open on the options. 1701Training Course and Business Conference Technology
When a new technology comes out, it's described as "leading edge" - it tends to be very expensive, and whilst it functions it does so with limitations that make its adoption limited - by only those people who really need the technology and / or are prepared to put up with its restrictions. When I was ...

1488New trainee laptop fleet for our Open Source courses
"The average age of our fleet is less than 3 years" - so said EasyJet when we flew with them earlier this month. 1415Better technology makes for longer commutes?
5% more people now have a commute that takes over an hour ago than was the case in 1996. So says the radio this morning.
