Open for the new year - Imber

During the second world war, the British Army needed practise areas and took over the area around the village of Imber on Salisbury Plain to make the "Imber Ranges", requiring everyone to leave their homes. The village has never been returned to the original owners / occupiers, and to this day can only be visited on special open days, driving along the range roads from John O'Gore's Cross or Warminster. (and apparently along less good roads from Heytesbury and Bratton)

There was such an opening on Sunday and I was in Warminster, so I took the opportunity to make the trip; here it is, recorded in photos.

The long and not winding road. On Salisbury Plain

The ranges remain inactive, and the road to Imber open, until the morning of 6th January 2014, and I recommend the trip for Wiltshire residents who have never done it. Teas and coffees available in Imber Chrurch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; getting around 1000 visitors a day to the church. See website at http://www.imberchurch.org.uk/ for details.
