Woodford, on the Salisbury Avon

The word "Avon" meant river in ancient English, so it's no surprise that there are many rivers called the Avon - indeed, our home town of Melksham in on the Bristol Avon - and that's less that an hour's drive from the Avon where these pictures were taken.

The Salisbury Avon rises on Salisburyplain and flows down through Amesbury, Woodford and Salisbury itself to the south coast.

On a fine summer's day, you can sit in the garden of "The Bridge" at Upper Woodford, watch the ducks on the river and if you're lucky see trout too.
