Wilton, ancient capital of Wessex
![]() The Old River Bridge in Wilton Map locator - Wilton Wilton was the ancient capital of Wessex - a name given to what is a large swathe of Central Southern England. Set on the river Wylye, it gave its name to the surrounding county of Wiltshire. These days, the city of Salisbury which is just up the road has turned Wilton virtually into a suburb, the town od Swindon is now the largest in Wiltshire, and the county seat is now Trowbridge. ![]() Wilton Churchyard Wilton is famous for its carpets - you can visit the old carpet factory and see their present day carpets and exhibitions, and visit the other shops in their shopping village.
