Tonbridge, Hastings and the Weald of Kent

Between London and the coast, about 50 miles to the South, lies the Weald of Kent with towns such as Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells all of which are prime commuter belt. Further out from London are old market towns such as Robertsbridge and Battle - where William the Conqueror won the battle of Hastings.

Map locator - Tonbridge

Hastings itself is on the coast about a dozen miles from the scene of the battle - a Victorian resort overlooked by chalk downs at one end. I fondly recall holidays in Hastings as a child, riding up those hills in the cliff lifts and enjoying the open spaces and countryside beyond.
