At the mouth of the river Thames, you'll find the town of Southend that grew up in Victorian times with the coming of the railways - being just 40 miles from London, it's real commuter belt these days but there are still a number of magnificent historic buildings around and that great pier over a mile long that stick out over the mud flats into the river.
