Railway train services to Melksham Station, Wiltshire

[imgl=train]The Swindon to Westbury train arrives in Melksham[/img]Melksham station is served by two passenger trains in each direction from Monday to Saturday, and 3 (2 northbound and one southbound) on Sunday. Trains run from Swindon, via Chippenham through Melksham and on to Trowbridge and Westbury. There are connections at Swindon to and from London.

[imgr=6b_1]Foundry Close, Melksham, and the train station[/img]By contrast, here is a similar view in 2011. The abandoned sheds of CEC Mechanical handling have gone and been replaced by housing. Pity the train still only stops twice a day each way, and at very poor times as far as potential passengers are concerned!

[imgl=melkshamworks]Works train approaches Melksham[/img]The countryside Nearmelksham is beautiful, as you'll see from these other pictures of a works train taken during engineering works one weekend.

[imgr=melkworks2]Off to relay the tracks[/img]The railway through Melksham was built by the Great Western Railway - one of the first branches off the main London to Bristol route, turning off at Thingley junction and passing through Westbury and Yeovil on its way to Dorchester and Weymouth. These days, it's a sleepy backwater but it comes to life as a diversionary route when other lines are being relayed ... at the weekend, it's not unusual to see a 10 or 12 coach express making its way along the single track.
