Lewis, Harris, Benbecula, North and South Uist and Barra

The Outer Hebrides are a series of beautiful, low lying islands set off the coast of Scotland, sparsely populated but with a rich history and a great deal to see. The largest town of Stornoway is reached by ferry from Ullapool - see pictures on our Inverness page.

You'll hear Gaellic spoken in the Hebrides, as well as English, and the larger places are named in both languages - Stornoway is Steòrnabhagh and the Isle of Lewis is Eliean Leòdhais. I was priviledged to give a PHP course on the Isle of Skye a few years ago to a team from SMO (Sabhal Mòr Ostaig) who have set up and maintain a dictionary and a Thesarus of the dialects of Gaellic online - see the Autumn, 2001 issue of our "Of Course" newsletter.
