The railways turned Crewe from a small village into a major town, with the West Coast main line from London to Scotland passing through, and a junction with lines to Chester and North Wales, Liverpool, Manchester, Shrewsbury and Stoke on Trent.

Looking back further, Beeston Castle was built in the middle ages to defend the Cheshire Plain. It now stands as a ruin overlooking a peaceful landscape.
