The town of Calne is less than ten miles from Melksham. Historically, it was the home of Harris's - famous for their meat pies and other Wiltshire ham products but the factory is now gone. You'll find the odd reminder though.

Around the back of Calne are Almeshouses from the 16th century, old churches, and a town green surrounded by houses of slightly later date - built by the merchants and traders of this old market town situated on the main (A4) London to Bristol road

Calne was important enough in the 1800s to warrant a branch of the Wilts and Berks Canal into the town - this long since ceased to be navigable, but a short stretch has been somewhat restored and makes a lovely evening walk.
