Long before the city of Salisbury was build on the banks of the river Avon, the hilltop at Old Sarum was fortified.

Old Sarum is managed by English Heritage and can be visited (for a fee) during the day. In the evening, you can still walk around the outer areas and get an excellent feelling of the magic of the place
