For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Use of a sub to avoid repeating code
Programming Principles example from a Well House Consultants training course
More on Programming Principles [link]

This example is described in the following article(s):
   • Do not copy and paste code - there are much better ways - [link]
   • Perl and the Common Gateway Interface - out of fashion but still very useful? - [link]

Source code: algo Module: Q101

# This Perl example shows you how you can use a sub to avoid
# having to repeat a block of code. The algorithm to split a
# piece of text into individual letters, eliminate spaces, and
# join it back up again is needed several times, with a different
# joing string

sub wordsort {
        my ($incoming,$sep) = @_;
        @nlet = sort(map(lc,split(/\s*/,$incoming)));
        join($sep,@nlet);
        }

open (FH,"stationtables.tsv");
@about = <FH>;
for (@about) {
        ($name) = (split(/\t/))[1];
        $nk = wordsort($name,"");
        # print ("$name - $nk\n");
        $table{$name} = $nk;
        }

while (1) {
        print "Word: ";
        chop ($lookfor = <STDIN>);
        $regex = wordsort($lookfor,".*");
        for (sort keys(%table)) {
                if ($table{$_} =~ /$regex/) {
                        print "$_ - $table{$_}\n";
                }
        }
}
