Writing Strings in Perl
this example from a Well House Consultants training course
Source code: cstr Module: P255
$him = "Henry"; $her = "Flossie"; $pet = "horse"; print "\"Don't wash the $pet\" said $him to $her\n"; print qq("I washed it yesterday" $him continued\n); print '"Don\'t wash the $pet" said $him to $her\n'; print q("I washed it yesterday" $him continued\n); $busy = `uptime`; print $busy; print <<"GERALD" This stuff is copyright $him and $her and their $pet. It may not be copied without the prior written permission of all of 'em which will be very hard to get from a $pet. GERALD ; $rst = <<`SHELL`; df -k pwd date SHELL print $rst; __END__ A string in double quotes isn't really a literal, as the " characters are an operator, with $ @ and \ being special characters within the enclosed string. If you really want a literal string, use single quotes ... and if you want to performa an operating system command and save the results into a variable, use back quotes. If you want to embed single, double of back quotes into one of these string generators, you can write q, qq, or qx then choose more or less any special character ads your delimiter ... that's also illustrated in the example. And finally, if you want to write a whole, multiline block of the stuff you can do so using a 'here' document where you define a demimiting string at the top of the block, and that string must appear on A LINE ON ITS OWN at the end of the block.
