C anc C++ afe no exception. You follow the if keyword with an
expression that gives a boolean result (or an integer result if
you prefer; 0 is taken as being the only false value). And you
can then follow the condition with a statement to be performed only
if the test was true, or in this case with a block of statements in
a { to } block.

Blocks and conditions can be "nested" inside other blocks and
conditions.

An else keyword may be used immediately following the block to be
performed if a condition is true; that block will be performed if the
condition was evaluated to be FALSE. Although the else code follows
the true block, the false block will NOT be run even if the true block
makes an alteration which would make the condition go false. */
