For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

2807Canal through Melksham - the options and issues
The old Wilts and Berks canal ran from the Kennet and Avon Canal (pictured) at Semington through Melksham, between Chippenham and Calne, past Wootton Bassett, through Swindon and on along the Vale of the White Horse passing close to Wantage before connecting to the river Thames at Abingdon. It was ...

4516Looking ahead on the blog
In response to a note that says "I'm glad to see the blog back" ... Many thanks for your note. From being so (physically) sick in August that I couldn’t keep a drink of water down if I lifted my head, I’ve come hugely forward - and I’m now somewhat unbalanced and uncoordinated and ...

4188Extended Weekend - but not a quiet one!
Back to Manchester this Monday morning for the final 2 days of a PHP course for the graduate intake at my customer. I've trained the same 10 bright people for the last two weeks too - looking forward to finishing things off with them by tomorrow evening, then south to Milton Keynes. Since I was here ...

2113Answering a question with a question
I have a target of giving a good answer to 90% of questions that I am asked in email within 48 hours of receiveing the question, and on a first response ... but just occasionally, we have to accept that we have to ask supplimentary questions. Here are two that have pulled my average down so far this ...

8How much does fuel cost for an airline flight?
When I spend hundreds of pounds on a transatlantic air fare, and hear the airlines complain on high fuel costs, I wonder how much of the money I pay is for fuel. British Airways have just raised their fuel surcharge to 6 pounds per long haul flight, stating that the surcharge is to cover the 12.5% rise ...

100Life is frail
On October 16th, we said our farewells to our fellow passengers on the Perl Whirl / Linux Lunacy cruise - a group of less that 150 people. I have just learnt that Markku Verkkoniemi, a member of that group, passed away on October 19th as a result of a motoring accident. I didn't know Markku personally, ...

905Not proud to be British
I'm proud to be British. Correction - I'm usually proud to be British, but there are times that I squirm with embarrassment at what we do to visitors to our country. Last night (or, rather, early this morning) I was up at Chippenham Station meeting 3 people off the train due in at 00:56 - they had flown ...

106Far from the sea, but close to the heart
The town of Weedon in Northamptonshire was the home of a great fort built by one of the Kings George about 200 years ago as a last retreat against the invading French, and that location was chosen because it's further from the sea than any other place in England. I wasn't too many miles from Weedon ...

97What makes a professional photographer?
Earlier this month, we travelled on the "Costa Mediterranean" on a one week cruise, and we snapped hundreds of pictures. Some good, some dubious in their quality to say the least. And during the cruise we attended a most interesting talk by Kevin Gilbert, professional photographer formerly of the White ...

To Graham and Lisa a son, Virtual Person Ellis. Virtual is a Designer child, conceived with the assistance of P and O Irish Ferries' web site support team to assist his father in the booking of a cabin on a sickly web site. At the tender age of 4 days, he's booked to accompany his father on a crossing ...

14London - Most expensive city??
Is London the "most expensive city in the world"? I've seen this written, but I doubted whether it's true. The Guardian and others in June placed it second, based on a report from Mercer Human Resources(table). The BBC on 12th August placed it 6th. Why the difference? The widely-reported June statistics ...

810A bad place for security firms
Tongue in cheek, our local locksmith describes Melksham as one of the worst possible places he could have chosen to set up his security business ... it's such a safe, low crime area that all the clever stuff that might be mandatory elsewhere just isn't needed here. I was chatting with Harry, my son's ...

21two plus two equals seven
Trivial facts can be drawn together at times to give non trivial conclusions. Two pieces of information which might appear to have no security interest can, when added together, provide the reader with a security nugget or loophole. I recall being told (a) that titanium is required for supersonic planes ...

700As I walked in to Oxford
I walked along the tree-lined Banbury Road into Oxford this morning, wide pavements, walkers, cyclists, blossoms and budding trees, sun shining. A truly beautiful morning. Even the traffic was flowing quite well for Oxford. A flash, and two small birds darted out playfully from the trees - ah - the ...
