For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

1970Plagarism - who is copying my pages?
I came across a little banner like this one when I was doing some gentle browsing this morning, and (as I'm interested in this whole copying of content / plagiarism business!) followed the link. Turns out to be a rather nice little engine which you can give one of your own URLs and have return a page ...

Welcome to the new, clearer, Horse's Mouth. You should spot that the text size is slightly larger, and contrasts better against the background. And if you're not keen on the new look, you are now empowered to change it to suit your own preference - simply click on the "customise" link on the right ...

1001.pdf files - upload via PHP, store in MySQL, retrieve
There's a common requirement to manage binary data - upload from a user, store, bring back in a web page. And where you have a substantial number of pieces of data - a lot of .pdf documents, .jpg or .gif images, or even Word documents, you'll wish to store them in a database with the potential for keyword ...

1187Updating a page strictly every minute (PHP, Perl)
For the Clock exercise that I mentioned in my last entry, I need to update the page once a minute. Exactly once a minute. At the start of the minute. I'm using client pull, where the browser asks for the next page - so my basic request is: <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="60; url=/clock/now.php"> but ...

528Getting favicon to work - avoiding common pitfalls
Ever wondered how to set up a "favicon" - one of those tiny logos that appear in your "location" line of your visitor's browsers? Ever tried to do it and found that - in spite of following all the instructions - it hasn't worked. Yes, I've been there too - but you'll notice that "favicon"s are now ...
