Under the Linux operating system (and other closely related operating systems too), there's a second environment available under which Java can be compiled and run. The Gnu compiler collection (gcc) can compile Java source code, and the user has a choice of class file or object file outputs. This means that you can use Java source code to build native applications under linux. You'll reduce your code portability but improve run time efficiency if you do so.
