For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

3143On time
Do we need to be on time? Well ... if I go to the station at 07:20 - that's a minute late for the 07:19 - there's a good chance that I'll have missed the train and have to make alternative arrangements to get where I need to be. Even a few seconds and "sorry, mate - I've already closed the doors; you'll ...

2981How to set up short and meaningfull alternative URLs
Wouldn't it be nice is URLs were shorter? Well - there are ways of making them shorter these days and you'll find them on networking sites like Twitter ... http://bit.ly/d7t8ID or http://bbc.in/XTQ8V . But where such URLs gain in brevity, they loose in comprehensibility. But it's very easy to provide ...

2774PHP - Object Oriented Design in use
A web server access log file contains a whole series of hit records ... each of which is logically turned into an object as different fields have different characteristics. 2773Dynamically watching your web site via a PHP wrapper
On our web site, we "wrap" all of our pages in a PHP shell, which allows us to reference extra information easily within any of our pages, provide up to date course and hotel data on every page, and keep a dynamic log of current visitors in a database. The wrapper is applied through Apache http server ...

2478How did I do THAT?
I had great fun putting together yesterday's blog about My train journey from Melksham, with a whole lot of images in the text rather than real words. For my first tests, the images sat on the line like this: which starts to look really ugly once you 've added more that a couple of pictures - so I ...

1938Predictive Load Balancing - PHP and / or Java
Load Balancing Algorithms - the standard offerings How do you share out the requests when you're load balancing? The computer (or other device) that's sharing out the load needs to make a decision as to where it should forward each request, and there are a number of different option commonly available. a) ...

1778Pointing all the web pages in a directory at a database
Do you want a web directory of pages, where each of them has its own page name (URL), but there isn't really a separate page for you to maintain - all the data is held in some sort of database on your server, and the pages are created automatically from the data as they're requested? You can do this ...
