For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

2050Why the Pony Tail?
I'm not sure if "why do you have a ponytail" is a question about a course or about a subject we teach ... actually it's rather personal... but it's a good question and I have chosen to answer in this case. Here are three possible answers for the beard - and - ponytail question. Which do you think it ...

1237What proportion of our web traffic is robots?
We welcome search engines to our site - to index our content and point their visitors back to us where appropriate, but such search engines are a means to an end and not an end in themselves. How much traffic to our web site is true visitor traffic, and how much is automata? An interesting pointer is ...

2520Global and Enable - two misused words!
The word global is used in declaring variables in some languages such as Tcl and Python to indicate that the variable being referred to is shared with the variable of the same name at the top scope. To use the word global, which implies that the declaration makes the variable visible everywhere, is misleading The ...

2385Reading all our recent news from a single source
1. We've stickied a recent news article on the from page of our site for a while, using the some ewhat mild (some would say inane) text "Recent Article". It's all been good stuff there - upcoming schedules, special deals for delegates, information about how our product really is different and how we ...

1307Troy, up state New York
I'm in Troy - upstate New York, at the tidal head of the Hudson river 150 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Troy is proud to be named after Helen of Troy, with her beauty shown on the top of a tall pillar in the town square. Troy is also proud to be the town of origin of Uncle Sam - someone else who's ...

1375Python v Ruby
Ruby v Python ... I've been asked for a comparison! • Both are object oriented scripting languages - or rather claim to be scripting languages, but are really compile-and-run via their own virtual machines, in just the same way as Perl and Java are. • Both are modern, Open Source languages ...

2222A (biased?) comparison of PHP courses in the UK
In answer to an email asking about alternative PHP courses ... I'm the tutor of our PHP courses, and I also keep a keen eye open on the options. Occasionally, I do a 'competitive survey' and compare what we have to offer in terms of prices and facilities to other people offering training in the subject; ...

2125We have lost a regular business guest
A note from Chris, on checkout duty: "Xxxxx has left - very happy with this stay and previous stays. Leaving for promotion in different company." We don't like to loose regular guests, nor do we like to have irregular guests choose to stay elsewhere if they're in Melksham again - so we look to keep ...

"We've gone from a flood to a famine of good accommodation in Melksham" - so we've been saying for the last year or two ... to the extent that we opened Well House Manor as our training centre and business hotel accommodation in October. We're already getting returning / regular Hotel guests, usually ...

1967LinkedIn - Thrice Asked, and joined.
I admit it - I was something of a cynic when I got my first invite to join LinkedIn; I saw it as yet another idea / directory and felt that - although I should be networking - there's a limit to the number of profiles I can maintain, and to the amount of information I should put out there to fade, gently, ...

1843How many cups of coffee?
It's exactly two years since we opened our doors at Well House Manor for our first residential training course delegate, and moved from being just a training provider to being a provider of overnight accommodation too. It may still be the summer holidays, but we're already planning our courses for next year! 1629A short introduction to our courses
Hotel guests and other visitors are often interested in the Computer Training we do at Well House Manor, but hitherto our sales and marketing material really hasn't included a handy single sheet to explain. 1621Linux and Java Course in London
There are certain locations which used to fill me with horror as to how I was going to work out the logistics of getting my equipment in and out for a course. 1521Evening drive across the roof of Wiltshire
A crisp winter's day ... and a shopping trip to Swindon. A late afternoon drive back over the Marlborough Downs. In Devizes, the pond by the green - the Crammer - shimmered as the light went down, with trees silhouetted against the sky. Caen Hill Locks on the canal run through the town, and as ...

1475Tcl/Tk - updating your display while tasks are running
Let me make two statements: 1. When you are popping up a new window from your program, the very last thing you want to see happen is for the window to gradually appear, with bits of it being resized as it comes on the screen - not only is such an operation irritating on the eye, but also it's burning ...
