For 2023 - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

4134Setting up your MacBook Air as a mobile broadband router
This blog tells you how to: 1. How to connect to Mobile Broadband using Huawei e156a and the latest Mac OSX software 2. 3596Want to learn iPad and iPhone programming? Come along and learn with me for free.
I'm learning Objective C. The language itself doesn't look too difficult, nor do the elements of how it's used on the iPad and iPhone for App programming. But there's an awful lot of content to those elements - a lot of putting together to see the complete picture. My target is to end up knowing Objective ...
3457Away to train - but still around by video for Melksham meetings
The nights are drawing in ... and it was already dark when I arrived at my destination this evening; I'm training away this week. Since I'm in a town I've not visited before, I'm wanting to have a look around and take some pictures. But my goodness - haven't things changed, and for the better; the ...
3058MacBook Air - hardware and system review
It's tiny - I can actually work with it in a standard class First Great Western seat and not have the screen bouncing and rubbing against the seat in front, even if my knees so - it's the MacBook Air. I'll admit it - I was tempted to get the previous Air when I was looking at the next generation of ...
3075Change of balance, of attitude, and of work method
There's a balance which, when tipped, changes one's whole attitude to something. Laptops have batteries - and that's marvelous because they can be used away from the power source. But when battery life was limited, taking the laptop away from the home / office was something of an expedition, with careful ...
2667Web page to telephone calls / links using an iPhone
Would you like people who visit your web site from their iPhone you be able to just click on your number and call you? Well - they can; the iPhone Safari browser recognized phone numbers and turns them into telephone links. But you might want a bit more control as the web site author ... • To ...
2188Camera to record where a picture was taken
Have you ever looked around your picture libraries for a picture of a particular place? I've just been doing so, and suggested to a delegate that cameras should have GPS systems on them. Apparently some do, so it's now just a question of getting the camera to use the latitude and longitude in the ...
2055Effect on server when memory runs out and swapping starts
Here's an interesting example from a web server showing what happens when real memory runs out and the system starts swapping ... it can be something of a downwards spiral in terms of performance, as the majority of the resources are essentially tied up by the swapping / keeping going at all once memory ...
2033Huawei D100 Wireless Router - Mobile Internet
I am writing up my experiences as I found it very hard to get this information when I asked ;-) - but "management summary" - this will be a very positive product review. What is the Huawei D100 Wireless Router? It connect the 3 mobile phone broadband wireless network (which according to the 3 blurb ...
1281Latercomer to the technology
"I am on the 234 - can I get you a cup of coffee on my way in?" I've mislaid my simple old mobile phone, and had Lisa's (tooooo many buttons) jobbie with me yesterday at the West Wilts show - alone on early stand duty as it's pretty pointless having any more there to open up a very simple booth and ...
1993Load Balancing - Hardware or Software?
If you're fortunate enough to be looking after a web site that's so busy that a single server can't handle all of your traffic, what should you do? One popular approach is to use a piece of specialised hardware - a load balancer - that sits in front of your network and distributed requests to a series ...
1827What a shock
You have probably seen the last pictures on this site ... taken with the digital camera I have been using for a couple of years. It was water resistant, contents-of-pocket resistant, and said to be shock resistant - but it turned out not be shock resistant enough for me - a clumsy oaf who managed to ...
630Hostnames spring forward
I remember Seal (Capital S as that was really the name) nestling in the bottom of my carry-on bag as I flew from London to Miami way back in the last millennium. There are only certain things you want to check in and - well - Seal was the Sun IPC workstation of 1992 vintage that formed the core of the ...
